Water distribution quantity to be reduced in Chennai by CMWSSB

A senior official from CMWSSB informed that a decision will be taken regarding the reduction in the daily quantity of water presently distributed in Chennai Metro city, especially as all the 4 major reservoirs supplying water to the city are at only below half-capacity level.

As there have been no rains since the last week, and also because the recent rains were not that heavy in the districts of Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram as compared to Chennai, the inflow of water to these 4 reservoirs reduced considerably.

The reservoirs at Poondi and Cholavaram did not receive any inflow at all. However, Puzhal has been receiving an inflow of 100 cft per sec and Chembarambakkam has been receiving 48 cft per sec.

All the 4 reservoirs did not fill even up to half-level. The total capacity of the 4 reservoirs is 11057 million cft. Currently, only 5247 million cft is available. As compared to this, the capacity on the corresponding period last year was 1122 million cft.

An official from CMWSSB explained that the present capacity as compared to the corresponding period last year is better. However, only if the northeast monsoon rainy season provides more rain and thus fill the reservoir, it is possible to continue at the current daily distribution quantity.

If there is no further rain, consideration has to be given to the prospects during the summer, it will be better to decide to reduce the daily quantity distributed.

The main reason is that there is no water inflow from Krishna river to the Poondi reservoir. As we have to keep the water distribution continuously till the next year southwest monsoon rainy season, we have to keep regularly reviewing the capacity of the reservoirs.
