A number of patents are filed with the Centre or Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR), Anna University. A footboard accident prevention system, vaccination for filariasis, use of microgripper in nuclear research, etc. are among the patents filed. It is now mandatory for CIPR to take up IPR world across India. CIPR is selected as the second in India as the Technology and Innovation Support Centre under the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Speaking about this, the director of CIPR, Anna University, Mr. Kanathababu said they are mandated to spread awareness about IPR at grassroots levels for 3 years. CIPR has assisted students, faculty members and individuals and corporates to file patent applications. The ultimate aim is to create, preserve and manage all their IPRs. CIPR is applicable for students and faculties right within and outside Anna University. It is not just about drafting and getting the applications, rather to educate about the best practices of IPR generation and commercialization. There is an exclusive course for patent drafting as offered by the CIPR. A startup facilitator was recently observed by the Indian Patent Office where free services are offered.

WIPO has extended funding support with which they are planning to reach over 150 institutions and kick-start ‘Train the Trainer’ program.

Creating awareness is just a step to begin with. There is substantial growth and progress observed in certain areas that we observed working on the ground. There are however much more to be done.

Hundreds of patents are just in paper format. The inventor and industry should be bridged. Commercializing IP is the ultimate key to benefitting the people, say experts.
