Keep your hands on steering wheel
While driving, especially on wet roads, make it a point to hold the steering using both your hands. Never talk over the phone or chitchat with your co-passengers while driving. Make the most of rear view mirror and ORVMs so that you can watch out the traffic that’s following you.
Keep the headlight on
Even during the day time, when it is heavily raining, it is advisable to turn on the headlights, as the visibility will be very poor. The oncoming traffic can also identify your car when you have the headlight on. During night, keep the light beam low, as the rain drops are likely to reflect high light beam. At times when you don’t feel confident of driving safe, turn on the hazard light and slowly park the car alongside the road.
Keep a distance from the car moving ahead
The roads tend to get slippery during rainy days. Hence maintain more distance of almost 5 car lengths between your car and the other vehicle moving in front. Even if the vehicle moving in front presses a sudden brake, you will not have to panic if you maintain considerable distance.
Maintain safe speed limit
Driving within the given speed limit is one of the safest ways to protect yourself at times of downpour. Stick on to conservative driving methods and do not accelerate or apply brake all of a sudden. You need to start earlier from your home without panic or last minute rush.
Stay away from puddles
You will not clearly know the depth of puddles, and hence it is better to stay away from them. Importantly, the puddle may be covering up deep potholes. When you drive at very high speed, you may perhaps drive through suspension components. You will also drive along stagnant water and splash it all over, and your engine will also consume a lot of it, thus resulting in serious damage. To avoid them, it is better to stay away from puddles.
Clean up the windows often
When the windows are full of fog from inside, it is better to switch on the AC. This will demist the window glass and fetch you with more visibility. On the other hand, when the fog is formed from outside, roll it down and allow air to flow in, thus neutralizing temperature difference. These days, modern cars come with a special demist or defogging mode.
