Water level of Chetpet lake and updates

The Chetpet Lake is a pond spread across 15 acres or 6.53 lakh sq. ft. It is located in Chetpet, Chennai and lies to the north of Chetpet Railway Station.
Belonging to the Department of Fisheries of the State Government of Tamil Nadu, the Chetpet Lake serves as the primary source of non-drinking water to Chennai city.
As the water in the lake is non-saline, it serves as a breeding ground for different kinds of fishes like Rohu, Catla, Mrigal, etc.
Eco-restoration project
Under the eco-restoration project by the Environment Department, over 12 lakes in Chennai will be renovated and improved of which the Chetpet Lake is one. This is a project of the year 2005. Its overall targeted budget is Rs 6 crore. Some of the developments to be made here in the lake include setting up a boat club, an aquarium, sea food stall, fish court and walkway.
Back in May 2012, the Chennai City Corporation aimed at constructing 1,475 meters long storm water drain between this lake and the Cooum River so as to drain excessive water during severe monsoon showers. The total estimated cost of the project was Rs 2.29 crore.
Furthermore, there were plans to develop the lake and its facilities at a cost of Rs 42 crore in 2013.
Angling, water sports, boating and open air auditoriums are some of the additions to be made here. There will also be an Eco Park with tracks to aid walkers and joggers. There will also be children play areas and restaurants serving sea foods.
There are also plans to link the Chetpet railway station and the Eco Park infrastructure through an elevated channel. Along the Spur Tank Road, a box culvert behind the railway track will be linking the lake with Cooum River.
In the year 2014, foundation was laid to construct park at a land area of 15 acres alongside the lake. In spite of these many plans and initiatives taken to improve the lake, each of these will need its own time period to get completed until which we got to wait!
