Heavy Chennai rains continue, more showers ahead

Posted on: 01/Nov/2017 10:20:50 AM
Chennai rains have been intense for the past 48 hours. In fact, after giving light to isolated moderate showers over the region, these rains have taken over and have been in the front seat in the past two days.

So much so that schools were closed yesterday and continue to remain shut today as well in view of heavy rains during the late-night hours.

Moderate to heavy rains continued over most parts of the city of Chennai during the last 24 hours. While the city only recorded 1 mm of rain during the entire day, rainfall activity did pick up pace during the night hours. In fact, more than three-fourth of rains were recorded between 1 am and 4 am.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Nungambakkam observatory recorded a whopping 41 mm of rain. Meanwhile, moderate showers of 29 mm of rainfall occurred at the Minambakkam observatory.

These rains are attributed to a weather system in the form of a cyclonic circulation persisting in proximity of Tamil Nadu. The cyclonic circulation is now over Sri Lanka and adjoining Gulf of Mannar. Thus, moderate rains with one or two heavy spells of rain are likely over Chennai and its adjoining areas.

Since moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal will continue, fairly widespread rains are expected over coastal areas including the city of Chennai for the next two to three days. Also, traffic snarls and localized waterlogging cannot be ruled out over some parts.
