Heavy showers to feed water tables across Tamil Nadu and Andhra

Posted on: 31/Oct/2017 11:27:38 AM
Northern parts of Tamil Nadu and districts bordering Andhra Pradesh lying by the side of Coromandel Coast have started getting respite from the northeast monsoon spells. According to the regional weather office reports, in the next 4 days, rainfall will keep continuing in northern parts of Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra regions. The public works department sources state that there is heavy rainfall received in the catchment areas of Chennai reservoirs and Kandaleru in Andhra since Sunday.

Chennai receives Krishna drinking water from Kandaleru. Its level is getting slowly raised. By the end of September, there was 4 tmcft water in the reservoir, and it has almost doubled in October and has now reached 12 tmcft. Further, the Somasila dam is also receiving steady water inflow and its gets drained to Kandeluru.

When the rain spells are the same till November, Chennai will save all its water needed to meet Summer 2018. In the past 3 days, Kollidam in Nagapattinam and Cuddalore have also received heavy rain showers. This will substantially increase the Veeranam tank groundwater table. This has brought a heave of sigh for Chennai city, says an official who monitors water table.

Until Monday night, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram have received rain showers, thus bringing good inflow in all the 4 reservoirs, meeting the Chennai needs. In another one week, it is likely that the water table in Chennai reservoir will increase by 2 tmcft out of its total 11 tmcft water.
