Good rains to lash Chennai for next 24 hours

Posted on: 16/Oct/2017 10:09:58 AM
Since last few days, the interior parts of Tamil Nadu have been witnessing light to moderate rains. In fact, during the last 24 hours also, some parts of Tamil Nadu did record good showers. On the other hand, both the observatories of Chennai, Nungambakkam, and Minambakkam have failed to record some good amount of rain and thundershowers within the span of 24 hours.

These weather conditions can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is seen persisting over east central Bay of Bengal. Further, this system is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours. A trough of low is also seen extending from this above-mentioned weather system up to coastal parts of Karnataka.

In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Salem 31.4 mm, Coonoor 11.4 mm, Dharmapuri 10 mm, Nagapattinam 2 mm and Kodaikanal 1.4 mm.

Due to the effect of these weather systems, moist winds are likely to blow over the region and thus, will result in giving moderate to heavy spells of rain over the state capital, Chennai and adjoining areas during the next 24 hours.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, the intensity of these rains is expected to reduce gradually after 24 hours. In spite of this, the city will continue to receive light to moderate spells of thundershowers for the next few days. In addition, the sky conditions are expected to remain cloudy to overcast during this period.

With this, the day temperatures are expected to remain around 30 degrees Celsius mark while night temperatures may decrease and are likely to range between 24 and 25 degrees Celsius.

As on October 14, Chennai stands at normal by 1% in regard to the sub-divisional rainfall distribution statistical figures.
