Metro stations not to merge with MRTS in phase 2

Posted on: 09/Sep/2017 12:07:02 PM
A part of the phase 2 of Chennai Metro Rail will be running in parallel with the existing MRTS routes. So, commuters can get out of the metro stations or go by the walkway for entering the MRTS facilities.

According to metro rail officials working on phase 2, the stations will be constructed along Velachery, OMR, Light House, and Mylapore all of which have functional MRTS trains already.

The alignment of phase-2 is amended such that it will function close with the present mass transit system encompassing suburban stations, MTC bus depots, and MRTS facilities so that multi-modal facility is available for the commuters, said an official.

At a few metro stations, it may be that the commuters should exit to reach the MRTS station, whereas at few other stations, there will be foot over-bridge at a few others. Currently, works to merge CMRL and existing MRTS stations are being discussed.

In the middle of OMR, elevated metro rails are planned. On one side MRTS stations will be set up. A few stations like Thirumayilai function on the elevated line in MRTS, whereas the metro rail will be functioning underground.
