Scattered rains to continue over Chennai

Posted on: 08/Sep/2017 6:18:48 PM
The state of Tamil Nadu, at present, is rain surplus by 47 percent, while the capital city of Chennai is by 14 percent. This can be attributed to the recent rainfall activities over many parts of the region.

During the last 24 hours, light to moderate Monsoon rains with one or two heavy falls were witnessed over parts of Tamil Nadu. However, Chennai remained rain free during the same time frame.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Karaikal recorded a good 35 mm of rainfall, followed by Coonoor 29 mm, Salem 15 mm, Coimbatore 15 mm, Tiruchirappalli 5 mm and Thanjavur 2 mm of rains.

These showers can be attributed to a north-south trough that extends from North Chhattisgarh up to South Tamil Nadu across Telangana and Rayalaseema. Besides this, a cyclonic circulation is also persisting over Southwest Bay of Bengal.

Weathermen at Skymet Weather expect these sporadic Monsoon rains to continue over the state for this whole week. However, intensity of these rains will be mainly light to moderate, but isolated heavy spells also cannot be ruled out.

While the interior districts of Tamil Nadu may witness active Monsoon conditions but the Gateway to South India, Chennai is likely to remain dry. In wake of these showers, the weather will continue to remain pleasant with temperatures settling near the normal across the entire state.

Until date, Chennai has recorded 52.4 mm of rain as compared to its monthly average rainfall of 147.7 mm.
