When original licence will be asked from you by traffic police?

The new order of all vehicle drivers having to carry their original driving licences comes into effect from tomorrow (Wednesday, 6th September). In this regard, The Chennai Metro Police have announced that the original driving licence will be demanded only on 6 specific violations of traffic rules.
The Tamil Nadu State Government had announced that it is mandatory for all vehicle drivers to keep their original driving licence while driving. Subsequently, the Chennai High Court also gave a verdict confirming this. The rule is effective from tomorrow. So, the vehicle drivers who operate with copies of licences and those employees who have handed over their original driving licence to their employers are in a challenging situation.
In this situation, an official from the Chennai Metro Police explained that the original driving licence will be demanded only in case of the following traffic rule violations:
- Talking on the cell phone while driving
- Driving at high speed
- Drunken driving
- Drivers carrying higher loads on their vehicles
- Taking passengers in the goods vehicles
- Signal jumping
This information is a relieving feature for the drivers as those who do not violate traffic rules are not likely to have any problems. However, it is still compulsory to show the original driving licence if demanded.
In case of those who violated the traffic rules, the original driving licence will be confiscated and would be rendered invalid at least for a temporary period of 3 months as per the Motor Vehicle Act by the Regional Transport Officer.
Thousands of cases have been booked on the above 6 traffic violations over the last 3 months. So, the explanation from the Chennai Metro Police is that just in order to take immediate stringent action on those who violate the traffic rules, this new requirement of demanding to see the original driving licence or confiscating the same has been imposed.
