Veggies, mutton and fish price uptick due to insufficient supply

Posted on: 06/Jun/2017 3:37:42 PM
In the past one week, veggies rates have seen an upsurge due to lack of supplies in the wholesale market. There is simultaneous rise in mutton and fish rates as well.

At the wholesale markets of Koyambedu, the rate of broad beans aka Avaraikkai raised from Rs 45/kg to Rs 65/kg. Butter beans increased up to Rs 200/kg while cauliflower and green peas rose up to Rs 120/kg and Rs 180/kg respectively.

Lack of rain showers and reduced crop cultivation have altogether caused this price hike, says one of the traders in the market. Crops have withered with harsh summer. The prices will reduce once monsoon sets in. There will be continuous increase in veggies rate in the following days as well.

For all the non-vegetarians, the price of mutton has raised from Rs 550/kg to Rs 600/kg due to short supply. There is no change in chicken rate though. Because of the newly imposed rules on cattle trading, there is uptick in mutton rate. Due to harsh summer, there is not enough supply of sheep and goat coming in from Andhra Pradesh. We get chicken supplies from hatcheries in Namakkal.

Because of ongoing fishing ban and lack of enough catch, there is also increase in price of fish. Vanjaram also called the King Fish has reached a historic price hike and sold for Rs 1,000/kg while black pomfret is sold for Rs 850/kg.
