As there were a number of defective operations in running the railway catering service for the passengers around 7 years ago, IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) was relieved from this responsibility. The contract was then handed over to a private party.

Following this, a number of complaints were received by the Ministry of Railways regarding the low quality of the food items, higher prices in some places for the same food item, and delay in catering.

Subsequently, the central Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu recently introduced a thoroughly revised food policy. As per this, 2 different sections were formed – one for the preparation of the food items and the other for distributing them. IRCTC will be responsible for preparation of the food items. For distribution, the best companies will be selected and the responsibility of distribution will be given to them.

A 33 percent quota has been allotted to the women for setting up food shops in the railway stations. It had also been decided to set up milk booths.

In this scenario, the price list of the various food items was released by IRCTC.
