The President gives approval for the Tamil Nadu government Ordinance on Jallikattu

Posted on: 28/Jan/2017 4:02:09 PM
A new ordinance was passed in the Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly on 23rd January to withdraw the ban on conducting Jallikattu. It was submitted to the Home Ministry on the same day for procedural approval.

The Home Ministry conducted a detailed analysis on the Tamil Nadu Ordinance and was satisfied. Following the details of the ordinance was passed on to the Ministries of Law, Environment, and Culture. All the three ministries gave immediate approval of Tamil Nadu’s ordinance.

All the above activities were completed in a single day yesterday – Friday, 27th January.

Subsequently, the President is approving the same today (Saturday, 28th January). It is gathered that the Home Ministry itself will complete the formalities on behalf of the president.

The central Home Ministry is set to send back the approved ordinance to the state government of Tamil Nadu. In this petition, Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao will sign.

After the formal approval from the governor, Jallikattu will be allowed in the state. It is expected that Law would be effective from Monday (30th January).

Generally, it takes a rather long time for all proposals/ amendments of laws from state governments to be analyzed and approved by the central government and the president.

However, on this issue of Jallikattu, all the formalities were completed in 6 days which is relatively a very short time. This is construed as a victory for the youth and students of Tamil Nadu.

Further, the cases against the Jallikattu ordinance are to be enquired in the Supreme Court on Monday (30th January). There are prospects that this ordinance can be claimed as temporary and hence the ban on Jallikattu should continue.

In order to prevent this possibility outright, the central government has acted double-quick and approved the Tamil Nadu state government ordinance.

With this ultra-prompt action by the central government, all probable hurdles against Jallikattu are now vanquished.
