A research report compiled by analytics form RedMango has said that cheap smartphones are also to blame for call drops. Telecom companies have been recently facing flak for the number of call drops.

According to the report, 67 percent more call drops are faced by users who use smartphones that are priced under Rs. 20000. It also says that call quality is affected by the type and version of the operating system in use.

Speaking about this, a senior official of RedMango Analytics said, Since awareness of this is low among users in India, mobile operators must compensate for this by designing their networks for the lowest performing smartphones that is available in the market. A call drop is when an ongoing call is suddenly interrupted against the wishes of the user. The call drop rates in India supersede the globally accepted standard of 3 percent. The country at present is experiencing around 4.73 percent call drops as projected by a study conducted by RedMango analytics in 20 cities in the year 2015. Moreover, the current call drop rates in India exceed the acceptable rate of 2 percent, as prescribed by TRAI.

A call may drop when the phone or tower does not receive the radio signal with enough strength to hold the call. Or, the quality of the connection is poor, which means a lot of interference in the connection between the phone and the tower. Also, if the network fails due to various issues such as congestion or a failed handover between two towers or a faulty network hardware leads to call drops.
