Let us know why we celebrate Womens day

8th March every year is being observed as International Women`s Day and celebrated throughout the world.This day was announced as Women`s Day by United Nations Council.

Women`s Day is observed a public holiday in many countries.This day can be considered as the symbol of liberation and freedom for women from the male-dominated society.Women`s Day is observed to emphasise the equality and the rights of women.

During the 18th century, only males worked in industries, factories and offices.Women were confined to their domestic house-chore activities only.Most women were not provided with even elementary education.

During the year 1857, job opportunities were provided in the coal mining, companies and other industries. Now, it was the turn for women also to be employed in these places making an announcement to the world that even women can work in industries.

However, even though women got jobs, gross injustice was done to them on the main issue of salary.So, the women were distraught. They protested and demanded equal pay as given to men. 

However, the prevailing US government did not accede. So, women throughout the country struck work. They indulged in protest and strike on 8th March, 1857.

However, this protest was muffled by the industries jointly with the government.After this, women raised their protest for equality in 1907.

World Women`s Rights conference was organised in Denmark in the year 1910.Various Women`s organisations from different countries participated and established their solidarity and demonstrated it to the world.

Germany`s Communist leader, Clare Sergine, who participated in this conference, proposed the date of 8th March as Women`s Day. How, this resolution was not passed.
Russia`s Alexandra Kellenra, who participated the women`s protest in St. Petersberg in 1920, proclaimed 8th March as International Women`s Day to be observed every year.

After this, from the year 1921, 8th March is being observed as Women`s Day every year.

UN proclaimed the year 1975 as the International Women`s Year. Countries including Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkinia, Peso, Cambodia, Cuba, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Maltova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan observe holiday on 8th March, every year, as Women`s Day.

The theme for this year`s International Women`s Day chosen by UN is Let us pledge that violence against women should be brought to an end.
