Three Metro stretches to be opened in August

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has said that it plans to open up three stretches in August. These stretches are Airport to Saidapet, St. Thomas Mount to Alandur and Koyambedu to Nehru Park, via Anna Nagar. An official has said that trial runs are expected to begin either by the end of this month or next month. 

All the lines were to be ready by the end of last year, but now the deadlines have been changed to the middle of this year. The entire project will take another two years at least to be completed. It is said to cost between Rs. 15,500 and Rs, 20,000 crore. 

The 10 km Airport - Saidapet and 1.5 km St. Thomas Mount - Alandur stretches are elevated, whereas the Koyambedu - Nehru Park line on the 8 km Poonamallee High Road via Anna Nagar stretch is underground. 

CMRL officials say, (We) plan to start trials as electrification of the line is nearing completion. We will be ready as planned.The state government will announce the inauguration date. The Tirumangalam - Shenoy Nagar underground stretch will be fully electrified by the third week of this month. The Shenoy Nagar Nehru Park line will have electric overhead cables in place by May, they say.
