Healthy Food Recipes - Samba Rava Khichadi (Broken / Cracked Wheat Khichadi)

Ingredients:
  1. Samba Rava (Cracked/Broken Wheat) – 1 cup
  2. Channa dal – 1 tsp
  3. Urad dal – 1 tsp
  4. Cashew nuts (Chopped) – 2 nos
  5. Ginger & Garlic Paste – ½ tsp
  6. Onion – 1 nos
  7. Tomato – 1 nos
  8. Carrot, Beans, Potato (chopped) – 1 cup
  9. Green Chilli – 1 nos
  10. Cooking oil – 3 tbsp.
  11. Fennel Seeds – ½ tsp
  12. Mustard seeds – Ό tsp
  13. Curry leaves – a few
  14. Coriander leaves – little
  15. Turmeric Powder – Ό tsp
  16. Sambar Powder – Ύ tbsp.
  17. Salt – as required
  18. Water – 2 ½ cups
Method of Preparation:
  1. Heat the pan and dry roast the cracked wheat till you get the roasted aroma of the cracked wheat and keep aside.
  2. Finely chop all the vegetables and keep it ready.



  3. Heat the pan with 3 spoons of oil and add mustard seeds and fennel seeds. Once it splutters, add urad dal, channa dal and chopped cashew nuts. Saute it well until its colour changes slightly brown.
  4. Then add the ginger-garlic paste, splinted green chilli, chopped onion and a few curry leaves and saute well.
  5. Once onion turns golden brown, add the chopped tomato and saute well until it shrinks and the raw smell leaves.



  6. Now add the chopped vegetables and saute well.  (If you have fresh green peas, you can add that too.)



  7. Allow it to cook well for about 2 minutes, then add the roasted cracked wheat and add 2 ½ cup of water and mix well.



  8. Now add required salt, turmeric powder and sambar powder and stir well.
  9. You can also add Ό tsp of garam masala powder. But this optional.
  10. Pressure cook this for about 1 whistle and then keep the stove in low flame for about 5 minutes and switch off the flame.
  11. Once the pressure got released, open the lid and add a few coriander leaves for garnishing and a spoon of ghee (optional) and transfer it to a serving bowl.



  12.  Serve hot Samba Rava Khichadi with Coconut Chutney!





Tips:
  • Following the above steps, you can also prepare Samba Rava Upma by avoiding vegetables, fennel seeds and tomato.
  • As we cooking the cracked wheat using pressure cooker,for 1 cup of Samba Rava, the 2 ½ cup measure of water is more than enough.
  • Usually the quantity of water solely depends on the size of the cracked wheat.
  • You can also avoid adding sambar powder and increase the measure of the green chilli, while preparing the khichadi.
