Marina Stretch & a few other places in Chennai: No place to cross to the other side!

If you have to cross Beach Road, if you want to cross to the other side, there are 2 options:
·         You walk half a km to the nearest zebra crossing

·         Zigzag your way out of the traffic? Most opt for the second option.

In Chennai, thewre are many other similar stretches like the arterial Anna Salai and Poonamalee High Road, where pedestrians scale the median to get to the other side of the road.

This is because there are not many pedestrian-friendly facilities on Chennai’s roads.

In most places, zebra crossings are nearly half a km apart, making it tougher for pedestrians.

Motorists seldom stop to allow pedestrians to cross when the signal is red.

Senior citizens are uncomfortable with poorly-lit subways and foot over-bridges without escalators.

Crossing the road is easier than climbing a foot over-bridge or using a subway. But to enable this, zebra crossings should be designated at regular intervals.

Now, the Chennai Corporation has started carrying out structural modifications to civic infrastructure to create a safe network of pathways to improve safety of commuters.

Commuters feel that foot over-bridges with escalators, like those installed on G.S.T. Road, will be very helpful.
