The department supplying food products to all ration shops has intimated all ration shop officials that works to attach additional pages in ration cards will commence in full swing from December 15. There has been a delay in this work owing to the extended time consumed for printing processes.

As of now, there are over 1,98,00,000 ration cards in existence in Tamil Nadu. Out of this count, over 20 per cent of them are found bogus. All these fake cards set to get eradicated and smart cards will soon be provided to ration shops at Ariyalur, Perambalur, Madurai, Pudhukottai, and few other districts.

Along with the Rs 39 crore funding by the central government, TN government is all set to finish off this project at an overall cost of Rs 318 crore by the end of 2015. Distribution of smart cards is currently being carried out.

Amidst these works, validities of ration cards are getting expired by December this year. Hence, government has extended the same up to December 2015.
