Posted on: 24/Nov/2014 3:38:09 PM
With the real estate prices’ hiking hugely, the cost of construction goes even beyond our dreaming capacity, especially for the middle class people. But, this situation is expected to change very soon, with the efforts taken by IIT Madras.

IIT-Madras has come out with revolutionary ideas of building eco-friendly, effective and fast construction of houses using Glass Fiber reinforced Gypsum panels. After the successful completion of the construction of two-story building at IIT Campus, experts from the department of Civil Engineering of the institute are now about to sign an agreement with TATA Housing Development Corporation Ltd. They have plans to build many housing projects in Boisar, suburb regions of Mumbai, which would be beneficial for the low and middle income groups.

GFRG method of building uses glass fibers and specifically calcined gypsum plaster for making the regular panels stronger. This will also make the building water resistant. However, all the floors will have the same floor plan. This building method will mostly avoid curved structures and domes or use concrete for such needs.

IIT-Madras is also in collaboration with many State Governments to build these low cost housing projects. This revolutionary approach is expected to make the dreams of many people come true.
