Dr P.K. Thomas, consultant respiratory system says Chennai city which is considered as one of the cleanest cities is now turning more and more polluted in the recent days and this has left the city with more number of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cases.

According to survey results by the System of Air quality and weather forecasting and research, Chennai stands in the second position in the list of most polluted metro cities. The first place is held by Delhi. The survey doesn’t intend to identify the levels of atmospheric pollution, but the elements behind COPD. The first and best way to stop COPD is to stop smoking.

The survey also adds that air pollution in the city gives rise to increase in COPD which is a non-communicable lung disease. Sufferers with COPD have the possibility of facing death, and this is likely to occur in 50 per cent cases.

In recent studies, it is found that over 25 to 50 per cent people are not even aware that they are suffering from COPD. The main reason behind this lack in awareness is that COPD doesn’t give rise to significant symptoms.

Symptoms of COPD includes chronic cough, sputum, breathless when the person gets involved in physical activity, etc.
