Increasing installation of solar power plants in TN

Posted on: 18/Nov/2014 6:09:16 PM
Following a huge shortage of grid power in the state, Tamil Nadu tops the list of states wanting to have solar power. Out of the total volume of rooftop solar power capacity in our country that counts to 285 MW, over 50 MW is generated in Tamil Nadu, says data from German renewable power consultancy firm Bridge to India.

Companies claim that this growing trend is due to the solar power installations done by good number of industries following insufficient supply of electricity.

Generating power from diesel generators will cost about 15 every unit, whereas in case of solar power generation, it’s just 7/unit. Companies including Asian paints, Grundfos, Schwing Stetter, Pumps India and couple of others have installed solar power system on their roof top for generating solar power.

As the state of Tamil Nadu is likely to face a hike in electricity pricing, solar companies are all well triggered to elevate their solar installation charges.

There is also one more advantage with the installation of solar power plant which is the accelerated depreciation scheme using which companies are eligible to write off 80 per cent of the overall project cost as depreciation in their first year. This in turn helps them save on their tax.
