Plea to standardize call taxi rates

Posted on: 14/Nov/2014 2:41:05 PM
Following the representation given out by call taxi owners and drivers seeking for rationalization of the car tariff just like autos did, the Madras High Court has instructed the government to take it under consideration and proceed with necessary steps.

The writ petition filed by a call taxi owner cum driver from Urappakam of Kanchipuram district was disposed at a division bench comprising Justices M, Satyanarayanan and R. Mahadevan. The State Chief Secretary and Commissioner Transport was directed to dispose this representation which was filed on 9th July 2013.

According to the petition submitted by the petitioner, it is said that the income from these taxis – approximately one lakh taxis in Tamil Nadu - is depended by over 50,000 families for their survival. These call taxis is being used by over 10 lakh people on a daily basis. Few of the drivers fleece the public demanding exorbitant prices.

Following the inflow of call taxi operators from multinational companies, there has been huge trouble in this business, especially in the recent days. These MNC companies charge too high rates from the customers. They make juicy advertisements and attract the attention of public which in turn affects other regular drivers.
