Rain inadequate for recharging groundwater level of Chennai and suburbs

Posted on: 07/Nov/2014 2:21:45 PM
Widespread stagnation of water has been reported in the city due to the mid-October heavy rains. This monsoon was witnessed rain of about 44.98cm against the average of 34.26cm.

About 36.7cm and 40.55cm of rainfall had been recorded at Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam last month as per data revealed by Chennai meteorological department, against lasts year’s 23.5cm and 15.72cm.

Groundwater level of the city was around 4.71mbgl last October, while last month saw 5.75 mblg. Officials at the water resources department stated that receiving excessive day for two days or so, are not likely to do any help in recharging groundwater level, since rainwater would be dispersed through the stormwater drains. The groundwater can only be expected to increase if there is rainfall regularly. 21 out of 32 districts had recorded water level fall this October against last year’s.

The districts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur has witnessed water level to fall by and 0.61m and 1.19m, while 1.58m fall was recorded by Thanjavur district and maximum rise in level of water has been witnessed in Kanyakumari by 1.34m.

Comparing post-monsoon and pre-monsoon data, WRD officials noted water level rise in the city, which went up from 5.95m in September to increase by 0.20m.
