Around 51% roads are considered to be still having single lane stretches in the country, which connects urban centers to the highways, although large traffic volumes are handled. These roads are important to connect suburbs and towns.

An evaluation released by the government called this issue a grave concern that needs to be looked at. It is state highways department that maintains it.

It is also acknowledged that the key roads are unable to handle huge volume of traffic, since they are narrow, causing accidents and Tamil Nadu is more prone to it than other states. The average width is 3.75m for the one-lane roads and is to be widened immediately.

The southern district roads, according to a local MLA which includes Sivaganga, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Dindigul and Theni needs instant attention so that economy in the region develops. He added that roads are to be widened and for this government is to acquire land.

Increase in private transport and income has paved rise to vehicle in huge numbers. Funds are being released by the state to enhance road connectivity along with the center for construction and maintenance of roads through NABARD, World Bank and Bharat Nirman Scheme. According to the experts, roads should be widened not based on guesses and experience, but through systematic studies
