Commencement and tariff details for Chennai metro rail

Metro rail services in Chennai is said to commence from the eve of Pongal festival. The minimum charge will be Rs 8 and Rs 23 the maximum. An official announcement is expected very soon, says metro department.
Metro railway department officials say they are focusing on constructing metro railway services as a step to reduce the increasing traffic levels in the city. The first phase of the service will commence between Koyambedu and Alandur covering a distance of 10 km. Test run between these two areas is successfully completed too.
The approval for the project will be provided next month. Following this, the service will commence by January. Charges for this service are fixed temporarily now. The tariff will then be sent for government approval and changes will be made if needed.
Tentative tariff:
· Rs 8 for the first 2 km
· Rs 10 for 2 to 4 km
· Rs 11 for 4 to 6 km
· Rs 14 for 6 to 9 km
· Rs 15 for 9 to 12 km
· Rs 17 for 12 to 15 km
· Rs 18 for 15 to 18 km
· Rs 19 for 18 to 21 km
· Rs 20 for 21 to 24 km
· Rs 23 for 27 km
