Exorbitant increase in Chennai city air pollution following Diwali

A day after Diwali celebrations got over, experts from across the city raised alarms as there were firecracker wastes in large amounts polluting the city. Over 43 tonnes of firecrackers were collected by the city corporation officials on Wednesday. The city still keeps receiving more of firecracker waste even after the eve of Diwali got over. The most air and noise pollution on Diwali was recorded in Triplicane with reports from Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board measuring the Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) of 297 microgram/ m³ on Wednesday. Considering normal days, the usual recorded RSPM is just 37 microgram/ m³.
 
Nungambakkam received huge levels of air pollution levels too. This area of the city had 180 microgram/m³ on Diwali which is usually 34 microgram/m³ on normal days. In Besant nagar, it was 110 microgram/m³ and the noise level here was recorded to be 73 dB. It is this area which records the least noise pollution on regular days which is 59 dB in general. Coming on to the busiest part of the city, T.Nagar, it recorded 180 microgram/m³ which is usually 145 microgram/m³.
