Though Chennai city doesn’t take itself the top position in most of the surveys conducted on it, the city never missed out to climb high position in the list of Places to Visit in 2015 given out by the Lonely Planet. Our city ranks 9th out of 10.

This again gets featured in the 26th position in New York Times’ global tourism destinations, 2014.

The Lonely Planet list was derived by Joe Bindloss who is a renowned guidebook and travel author. This site showcases the beauty of places and their attractiveness especially for travelers heading from Europe and America.

When a city is featured this way, it naturally attracts tourists and elevates their level of interest. According to the proprietor of a travel agency based in Chennai, he says compiling such list directly or indirectly pulls lot of visitors. He adds that travel agencies do not partner with anyone directly, but will have mediators or contractors to get bookings or reservations done.

While Kapaleeswar temple in Mylapore and Kalakshetra are regarded as the most tried and tested tourism staples by NYT, it is the Chennai Metro rail that fetches 9th position to the city in lonely planet list.
