Power managers are thrilled now. Following rain in the last few days and many commercial establishments being closed on Thursday for Diwali, the demand for power dipped to a low of 5,439MW in the afternoon. The mid-day demand was the lowest this year. Earlier, at 7.50am, considered morning peak hour, the demand was 7,976MW. The maximum demand, on June 24 this year, was 13,775MW. With heavy showers and the mercury dipping, the use of air conditioners too came down, bringing down domestic consumption considerably .

The total power consumption in Tamil Nadu that peaked at 293.969 million units on June 20, dropped to 160.967 million units on Thursday .

The TN Electricity Board has been grappling with power shortage since mid-September when wind generation stopped.Power supply has been hit due to flooding of the Simahdri thermal plant in Andhra Pradesh from where TN gets 220MW . Some thermal and nuclear power units in the state have been shut for maintenance. Breakdown of machinery in some units also hit generation.
