No power cuts in Tamil Nadu because of wind power

Wind power continues to come to the state’s aid, going by the daily grid details of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Only when wind power generation adds to Tamil Nadu’s kitty, the state is somewhat spared of power cuts. For instance, on the evening of October 13, when wind generation touched 1,000MW, outages reduced. On October 14 morning, wind generation was only 15MW and the state faced 936MW shortage.
Adding to its woes, the state lost nearly 835MW from Kudankulam, Simhadri and Kalpakkam power plants.
From the first unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, Tamil Nadu was getting 515MW, but due to some technical problems in the unit, it stopped generating power.
The NTPC’s Simhadri thermal plant in Andhra Pradesh also stopped production due to the Hudhud cyclone and lost 220MW. We also lost 100MW from the Madras Atomic Power Stations (MAPS) in Kalpakkam due to annual maintenance.
Along with this, unit 2 of the Vallur thermal plant with a capacity of 500MW is also down for maintenance. It will be a few days before it restarts production. Tamil Nadu gets 350MW from this plant. The Kudankulam unit has been shut down for more than a month. The unit is likely to be restarted only after a month, said the official. Meanwhile, for the first time, generation from Tamil Nadu’s thermal power stations crossed 4000MW on Tuesday.
It may take a while before the Simhadri plant is back on its feet as many areas in Andhra Pradesh have been ravaged by the cyclone that crossed Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
