Police are making elaborate security arrangements to keep a check on crime at crowded shopping hubs like T Nagar and Purasaiwalkam on the occasion of  Deepavali.

Police have set up three watch towers — one each at Ranganathan Street, Usman Road and Mambalam railway station — to monitor crowd movement. Policemen are provided with binoculars to locate suspicious elements.

Two DCs, three ACs, 10 Inspectors, 20 SIs, 250 constables drawn from local strength, 200 constables from armed reserve police and Tamil Nadu special police, and 150 members of homeguards, are involved in the security in T Nagar, Usman Road and Ranganathan street.

A separate control room and helpline 9498100176 will be set up at T Nagar and barricades have been put up.

Similar arrangements have been made in Purashaiwakkam, Washermenpet and Velachery, with about 200 policemen and security personnel been deployed.
