Increasing city pollution, an alarming report

Posted on: 11/Oct/2014 3:08:50 PM
State agencies seem to be lethargic in checking out the pollution level of the city vehicles. Despite the presence of 63 per cent nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere which is contributed by the city vehicles, agencies functioning here are not very bothered about conducting checks on it. These centres remain idle without getting used.

There has been an immense increase in pollution in the city. Considering the period between 2007 to 2011, Chennai has seen an increase in pollution by 166 per cent, says Centre of Science and Environment in its last year report. However, no move is taken or monitoring is done by the pollution control board in Chennai.

As of now, there are over 51 centres prevailing in Chennai which are exclusively meant to issue pollution certificate for vehicles. Each one of these is currently carried out by private agencies. Speaking to top traffic police officials, they say despite presence of smoke detectors, no checking is done on vehicles for many years now.
