Helpless state of the mentally-ill

Though Tamil Nadu stands on the top in providing healthcare services, it doesn’t have enough manpower and infrastructure to carry out mental health programs.

In the government-run Institute of Mental Health, Chennai there are just 1800 beds and one more private hospital is left with just 100 beds, whereas the total population is exorbitantly 65 lakh.

Owing to lack of infrastructure and services, nearly half of these beds are left empty. It is very well known that people with mental illness will required treatments for prolonged period. The worst part here is they do not have any facility for treatment in private hospitals, say D. Kotteswara Rao, mental health counselor, Schizophrenia Research Foundation.

It may be a shock to most people, but according to estimates given by World Health Organization, one out of every four people will definitely have any sort of mental health troubles! That’s hard to digest though! It is also reported that by the year 2020, at least 20% of the population will fall mentally ill!

Most common cause of this kind mental illness is abandoning a person from their families. Over 70% of mentally sick people wander o streets, said Rao.
