In one month from now, Japanese major Yamaha Motor India will launch its Greenfield facility near Chennai. The company will come up with its first lot of scooters by the early days of 2015. With this new unit, the company believes to double its two-wheeler market share to 10 per cent in another few years.

Speaking to the CEO and Managing Director of Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt ltd, he says the new plant will commence functioning by November and the commercial production will be kick started by the early 2015. The plant will give out scooters in its first phase, he adds.

This plant is aimed at having a capacity of manufacturing 4 lakh vehicles every year. As per this count, the overall production of two-wheeler in India will climb up to 1.4 million every year. It is to be noted that Yamaha already has plant in Surajpur in UP.

The company targets to sell 6 lakh units in the market here and export 2 lakh units. Asked about the excess capacity, Vice President Roy Kurian says there is a good improvement in the two-wheeler industry now. The company is eyeing on expanding the distribution network which in turn needs excess capacity, he adds.
