No Krishna Water to Chennai

Posted on: 09/Oct/2014 2:27:58 PM
Chennai will not receive Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh for now, it may take some time to reach the city. The city has to get its own two tmcft (Thousand Million Cubic Feet) stored in the four reservoirs.

Kandaleru reservoir present in AP from where water is supplied to Chennai is not possible for now as the reservoir doesn’t have sufficient water to share. Senior officials from the Water Resource Organization (WRO) say they are not even writing to the counterparts in Andhra Pradesh requesting for water release which was stopped on 15th September.

The WRO officials are relaxed enough as the Chennai Metro Water (CMWSSB) has promised of having enough water in reserve for about 2 tmcft. CMWSSB says the water available now will last till end of December.

In Chennai, the average requirement is about 1.2 tmcft. Combing all the water reserve present in four reservoirs: Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Cholavaram and Puzhal, it counts to 2.009 tmcft to be precise as on date.

The city is now looking forward for the northeast monsoon by or before the month end, and hence CMWSSB is confident enough to replenish all reservoirs with surplus water.
