No qualified pharmacist in many medical shops in Chennai, a harrowing report

Posted on: 06/Oct/2014 6:21:50 PM
State Food Safety and Drug Administration have registered over 1500 cases against retail and wholesale medical stores in Chennai since 2011. The city has about 4000 medical shops for now.

Sources say several pharmacies functioning in the city do not comply with Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Most of these complaints stress about pharmacies functioning without even a qualified pharmacist.

It is well known that only a qualified pharmacist can handle drugs in medical shops. Out of all medical shops in the city, 458 of them do not have no pharmacist at all, say reports collected since 2011.

743 cases are on for poor record maintenance of bills, 299 cases are filed for selling medicines without prescriptions. Speaking to S Abdul Khader, director of drugs control, he says stringent action is taken on these wholesale stores periodically. More importantly, actions are taken for not appointing qualified pharmacist.
