Plans to make use of plastic wastes for laying roads seem to have floundered. Plans were derived to collect waste plastic materials, shred them and make use of it for laying roads. Shredding units were set up at a cost of Rs 1.39 crore in various places across the city, however these are left unused now.

Out of the targeted quantity of 1400 tonnes of plastic wastes per year, the civic body managed to collect just 50% of it. Ever since February 2012, only 1329 tonnes of plastic waste were shredded in 15 zones.

Exclusive shredding units were set up to collect plastic wastes and lay roads. Few of these machines stopped functioning and are kept unused by the corporation.

Over Rs 72.66 lakh was spent just to buy these shredding machines. Setting up these new shredding centres costed Rs 62.18 lakh. Electrical works costed Rs 4.64 lakh. Price of each shredding machine ranges between Rs 29 lakh and Rs 71 lakh. For example: In Ambattur zone, the shredding machine of Rs 29.62 lakh is in use, whereas in Sholinganallur, the value of shredding machine is 71.92 lakh.
