Fuming travel through one-way Evening Bazaar Road, an irksome experience

More number of vehicles is found stagnant on road due to jam-packed traffic in and around Chennai Central railway station and Government General Hospital on EVR Periyar Salai (Poonamallee high road).

The reason is not increasing number of vehicles, but a move by the traffic police. The Evening Bazaar Road was earlier allowed for two-way traffic, but now police officials made it one-way as a portion of it got earmarked for staging protests.

Evening Bazaar Road which is very close to Central Station was made one-way about a decade ago. One portion of it was fully dedicated for protests. However, in the year 2010, as a response to public interest litigation, High Court banned all protests outside Memorial Hall.

Protest doesn’t seem to have stopped in the area and is getting continued despite court orders. The road remains one-way indeed. Speaking to an auto driver, he says the Evening Bazaar Road is too broad and should be definitely made a two-way stretch. He adds that the traffic is getting worse day by day due to lack of enough space.
