He had significant influence which gradually extended from his state, Tamil Nadu to All India level over his political life. He was involved in the Indian independence movement. He was acknowledged for his astute analysis and decision making.

He earned the sobriquet, ‘Kingmaker’ (especially during the 1960s) as he decided quite a number of times as to who should be chosen to lead the government. Perhaps, one of the most significant role he played was in his firm establishment of all importance on education. He was especially keen on ensuring that children must be given good quality education to turn out as better citizens. In Tamil Nadu, his home state, he is still remembered for bringing school education to millions of the rural poor by introducing free education and the free Midday Meal Scheme during his tenure as chief minister.

He was awarded India`s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously in 1976.The domestic terminal of the Chennai airport is named "Kamaraj Terminal", Chennai`s Beach Road renamed "Kamarajar Salai", Bangalore`s North Parade Road as "K.
