Here comes  a story about the delicious sambar prepared more often in most South Indian houses!

Believe it or not, there are stories that Sambar have its birth place at Maratha ruler Shivaji’s son. It is said Shivaji’s Son Sambhaji wanted to prepare dal for himself as his chef was away.

Ever since he tried the dish, tamarind and dal were never used together in a dish. He however changed with his first try recipe, says S. Suresh, Tamil Nadu State Convenere of Intach while he gave a lecture at Tanjore Maratha history. He then loved the preparation and gave it the name Sambar.

This Sambar has now emerged as a very important recipe of South Indians and has over 50 varieties in it. Out of all, the Tanjore Sambar is what stands ahead of all.

While the Sambar has the kind of Tamarind soup flavor, the Thanjavur Brahmin sambar is considered special as it doesn’t have the use of onion or garlic, at the same time it is made too spicy.
