Stringent action against lease defaulters, heavy move by corporation

The city corporation has started its hunt for shopkeepers across the city who have not been paying taxes for long years. There are over 6140 shops spread in 150 complexes in the city.

Speaking to one of the officials from the corporation, he says 1250 defaulters are identified and notices are sent to them. He added that stringent action will be taken against them if they refuse to pay arrears. To note, five shops in Rotler Street near Vepery were sealed on Wednesday owing to non-payment of rent and arrears.

Further, those who have leased shops have sub-leased them and earning rent based on market rate. Only few such original allottees are still using the complexes, said the official. Also, most of those who occupy the shops are found to be unauthorized. Several lease agreement files are also found missing in the corporation.
