Aiming to double the number of Amma canteens from 200 to 400, the Corporation of Chennai has plans to set up new ones near temples. It is likely that the proposal will get approved during the corporation council meet on Monday. A corporation official says the proposal will be forwarded to the government once the council approves it.

The Hindu religious and Charitable endowments department is now having the control over all temples, and the corporation requires the permission of this department for setting these new canteens.

In the first phase of the projects temples including Adi Keshava Perumal Temple, Subramanya Swamy Temple, Korattur, Alandur will be covered. In addition, the civic body has plans to set up a canteen at the Sipcot Industrial Park, Guindy.

As of now, the canteen at Adi Keshava Perumal Temple is to be set up at 3600 sq ft area and the one at Subramanya Swamy Temple at 1200 sq ft.
