The surplus stock from the first crop has arrived now!!

The wholesale prices of the vegetables at the famous Koyambedu market complex in Chennai have gone down by 20%. This was mentioned by some vendors. The reduction in the prices of the vegetables is lesser than that in the previous years. The Corona effect has been responsible for this.

Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Vegetable Merchant’s Association, had pointed out that in November when lockdown was lifted the farmers returned to plant the first crop. There were some labour issues and just 70percent of the crops were only planted by the farmers. When compared to the previous years, the lesser supply has been received now. This has resulted in a lesser dip in the prices. The vegetable prices have gone down by 20% with just 430 trucks arriving at Koyambedu every day. It is now said that this trend would be there till 10thMarch and prices might decrease again. The vendors were of the view that the chances of prices increasing were very low.

From Rs 40 per kg, the prices of beans have decreased to Rs20 now. Vegetables like cabbage, brinjal and broad beans would be sold for Rs 20 per kg this week. Others like radish, chow chow and turnip would be sold at Rs 10 per Kg. It is learnt that the prices of vegetables like drum sticks and onions are high. In this week, drumsticks would be sold at Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg and onions and small onions at Rs 35 and Rs 120 respectively.
