Now, groundwater level increases in all the 15 zones Chennai

The month of November witnessed heavy incessant rains in Chennai city and this has increased the groundwater levels now. Truth is that all the 15 zones belonging to GCC have recorded rises in the water table. It is brought out that the ground water table in 14 zones has gone up by more than 1 metre and in some zones the ground water table has gone more than 2 metres also. It is superb to note that the city of Chennai’s groundwater table has gone up by an average of 1.64m now.
The level of ground water table has gone more than 2 m in zones like Ambattur, Alandur, Thiru Vi- Ka Nagar and Valasaravakkam. This has been mentioned by the MWD.
The groundwater level in the zone belonging to central Chennai has gone up by more than 2.66m. Thiru Vi- Ka Nagar zone has registered the highest movement now. It must be recalled that in the month of October this zone had groundwater at 5.22 m and in November the groundwater was at 2.56m.
The shallowest groundwater level is now in Anna Nagar zone at 1.70m. The groundwater level was at 3.57m here in October. It must be taken into account that the Sholinganallur zone recorded a rise of just 0.54m.Whe compared to the level recorded in the month of September the groundwater level has increased by just 0.44m at the beginning of the NE monsoon season in October.
An officer belonging to the utility shed light on the factors like monsoon rains plus on the proper maintenance of the rainwater harvesting structures or RWH for the increase in the levels of groundwater in Chennai. An official belonging to the MWD spoke about how the details regarding the lakes (differences in the website data and actual data) would have been recorded mistakenly and how they would be corrected soon.
