As successive holidays were declared by both the public and private sector organisations for the Pongal festive season, the power requirement in Tamil Nadu came down appreciably during this holiday period.

The daily power requirement level in Tamil Nadu is 13000 MW. Even during the period of severe winter session during the last week, the power demand did not go down. As on the 12th and 13th January, the power requirement of the state of Tamil Nadu stood at 13780 MW and 13867 MW respectively.

In this situation, Pongal festive season holidays were announced between 14th and 16th January. Most of the private and public organisations remained closed during this period. So, the power requirement came down quite appreciably.

The state power requirement on 14th January (Pongal) was 12902 MW. On 15th January, it was 12634 MW. On 16th January (Tuesday – yesterday), it was 10267 MW.

The requirement on 16th January was lesser by 2733 MW as compared to the average. Following this, the generation of power was reduced in the various thermal and hydro power stations in Tami Nadu.
