Parle launches seventh edition of Golu Galata

Posted on: 30/Sep/2011 5:28:41 AM
On the eve of Navratri, Parle Products, India’s largest biscuits and confectionary brand, launched its Golu Galata Festival with celebrities like Uma Riyaz, Venkat and Nisha. Organised for the seventh year in a row Parle’s Golu Galata Festival this year is expected to be the biggest of its kind in the entire state.

The festival this year is all set to enter the Guinness Book of World Records driven by the participation from people across the state. It is expected that more than one lakh Golu dolls will be on display at one place – a first for any place across the globe.

Parle originally began the festival with a view to revive the dying tradition of the Golu Galata festival in the Tamil Nadu. It was seen that the youth had become disconnected with the tradition of preparing Golu dolls during the Navratri period. Over the last seven years, Parle, as a part of the Golu Galata festival has been taking several initiatives to get the youth involved in the festival.

This year, Parle will be organizing a common meet with all participants coming together to participate in a community Golu by displaying their Golus at a common location in Chennai’s Island Grounds during the festival. More than 1 lakh people are expected to participate – creating a world record. The officials from the Guinness Book of World Records have also given their confirmation to attend and record the feat at the event.

Mr. Mayank Shah, Group Product Manager, Parle Products, officially launched the seventh edition of the festival along with the celebrities from the state. He said, “While we embrace new values and should be open to all cultures, we should not forget our own culture. I am glad that our initiative of the Golu Galata festival has grown significantly over the past seven years. Today, the youth has started looking forward to the festival, which is an important milestone for us.”

GOLU, also known as “Navaratri Golu”, is celebrated actively during nine days of Navaratri festival in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pardesh and Karnataka. In Tamil Nadu, traditionally, women decorate various dolls (called Golus/Kolus) made of clay during Navratri celebrations by setting up odd number steps and keeping Golus on it. This display is well decorated and friends and relatives are invited to witness the same. Through a detailed research, Parle found that due to time pressures, this tradition is slowly dying and is getting restricted to a select few households. Thus, to revive the fading/dying tradition, Parle introduced this novel promotion called Parle Golu Galata contest in 2005. Golu means Doll &Galata means festival/Carnival/Dhammal.
