Gone are the days when a graduate in engineering from Tamil Nadu having just English proficiency was able to get job offers with high salaries easily!!

Now, theTN engineering graduates must have proficiency in a foreign language also to get jobs with high salary packages as the new markets are opening up crossing geographical boundaries.

To help the engineering students to find  a job abroad, the TN govt has introduced foreign languages like Japanese, French and German etc in the government and in the government aided engineering colleges across TN.

In 10 govt based engineering colleges in the state of TN languages like Japanese, French and German are being taught to the final year engineering students. In the 2022-23 year, more than 600 final year students have benefited from this. This was mentioned by a senior officer from the Higher Education Dept.

In this year, the number of students who have shown interest in pursuing a foreign language has gone up by nearly 20%. From the next academic year onwards, a new foreign language like Chinese and Russian would be introduced for the students and more seats would be allocated.

After taking up a new foreign language course, basic communication tools would be possible for the students. These include introducing oneself, greeting others, ordering food and booking appointments in any foreign language etc.

The director of Japanese Language School, ABK AOTS, Dosokai, TN centre, Anuradha spoke about how 5 years back there were just 300 to 400 students and how now there are 3000 students. She hinted that every year the Japanese Language Proficiency test was conducted in the months of July and December. Truth is that more than 3500 students have appeared for the test in 2023 compared to just 800 students a few years back. The superb piece of information is that there are many Japan based firms operating in TN and engineering students proficient in Japanese would be able to get jobs

It was brought out by a French tutor in TN that more than 10% of the students in India are learning atleast one foreign language. He threw light on how other than English, French is the only language that is being spoken on all 5 continents. As a destination for those  students who want to pursue their higher studies, France has been one of the top 3 famous European countries now.
