1st year medical college classes start today - regulations on students dress

The 1st year classes for medical courses in all government medical colleges starts today (Monday, 1st August).

The Directorate of Medical Education has ordered certain regulations on the dresses of students.

The 1st stage counselling sessions for the medical courses MBBS and BDS were conducted at the Multi-specialty hospital located in the Omadhurar Government Garden in Anna Salai from 20th June till 25th June. During the 6 days’ counselling, the state government quota of 2318 seats in all 21 government colleges including the Coimbatore ESI Medical college

Further, 65 seats for MBBS in the Chennai K K Nagar ESI Medical College and 78 seats out of the 85 in the Tamil Nadu Government Dental College were filled. Of the 470 seats available as government quota in 6 private (self-financed) medical colleges, 302 seats were filled.

The government quota of 72 seats in 7 private (self-financed) medical colleges, 7 seats for BDS Course in Tamil Nadu Government Dental College in Chennai, the government quota of  970 seats in BDS Course, and the seats returned from the All-India quota are all yet to be filled. These are to be filled during the 2nd stage counselling sessions.

The students admitted during the 1st stage counselling have all joined colleges selected by them.

In this scenario, the first year classes are commencing today (Monday, 1st August) in the government medical college and the Tamil Nadu Government dental college.

The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has imposed a restriction on the dress for the students. When enquiring about the issue, DME officials explained that the students should not wear items like T-Shirts, Jeans, leggings and sleeveless. The female students should keep their hair neatly in a tight form. The male students should wear shirt and pant, tucking the shirt in and wearing shoes.

Female students may wear sarees. However, male students cannot wear dhotis. Students must not use cell phones in the class.

All heads of institutions have been instructed to keep strict monitoring on this aspect.
