Good news for the people living in the state of Tamil Nadu. Health minister Mr Vijaya Bhaskar at a workshop on Tuesday 23rd January 2018 spoke about how by the year 2022 Tamil Nadu state would eliminate malaria totally.

This workshop was organized by health department to eliminate malaria and the words of minister attracted the attention of many present at the workshop.

The minister for health threw light on the fact that out of total 32 districts in TN at least 22 districts are in the elimination phase and he spoke about how by the year 2022 this malaria would not be present in the state of TN. It is important to mention that a training handbook for the elimination of malaria was also released and entomologists were given shields plus certificates in this workshop.

Better sanitation and vector control play huge roles in the elimination of malaria and for this purpose the public health department has joined hands with the municipalities and corporation. This was confirmed by some senior health department officials.

Dr. K. Kolandaswamy expressed his thoughts about this malaria elimination and said networking with the neighbouring states is considered so that areas in the borders also get covered. It must not be forgotten that in the year 2017, the people of TN suffered badly in health due to diseases like dengue, chickengunya, Japanese encephalitis etc and few lost their lives also.

In city of Chennai alone there were as many as seven cases of malaria out of total of 10 cases in the state of TN. This was as per the information given by the directorate of public health.

It is really sad and shocking that Chennai had as many as 3303 malaria cases out of the total 4671 malaria cases in TN and this was until October 2017.

It is clear that prevention strategies play crucial roles in this malaria elimination process and if this prevention strategy is given importance then it would not be a big task to eliminate malaria in Tamil Nadu. Few prevention strategies are strengthening malaria surveillance, early detection, indoor and outdoor sprays usage plus promoting use of net coated with long lasting repellents etc

It is worthy to note that malaria is an infectious disease caused by the Plasmodium which is a single celled parasite. Infected female anopheles mosquito is responsible for transmission of this malaria. People suffering from malaria usually have symptoms like fever, vomiting, tiredness, headaches. Sometimes this malaria might cause seizures, yellow skin etc.
