Schools and colleges in Chennai would remain shut today following incessant rain in the city, the district collector declared.
The Meteorological Department said the Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam areas in the city received 55.9 millimeter and 77 millimeter of rain respectively till 5:30 am.
Due to upper cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar, "Chennai would receive few spells of rain, heavy at times today. There would also be isolated rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry," the Met Department added.
The crucial north-east monsoon sets in Tamil Nadu around the last week of September, upon which the state depends quite heavily for irrigation and drinking water needs.
